Fifteen years ago, I had to import collagen peptides from the USA. You simply could not buy it here. 

These days, you can barely move for ads on social media for collagen in many different formats, all claiming to be the best, or be 5 different types, or whatever. 

The reality is, 99% of this is marketing nonsense and we will not be playing that game. 

We read the data/science, consider core principles of biochemistry and apply some common sense with a focus on results. 

So, as a reminder, here is the truth:

The source of collagen is irrelevant; whether its cow or fish or chicken, it does not matter. 

Collagen in its natural state can not be broken down by our acids and enzymes enough to go from the gut into the blood. 

So we have to denture it (unwind it), then HYDROLYSE it, which is chopping down a long string of amino acids, into a unit 2-10 aminos long, known as PEPTIDES. 

Your enzymes then further break the peptides down into INDIVIDUAL AMINO ACIDS, that then enter the blood stream. 

So, riddle me this, how does your body or your collagen know if these amino acids come from a cow or a fish or a chicken? 

Clearly it cannot, AND the amino acids will be used for whatever is the metabolic priority at that time, which is often not making new collagen. 

The key thing to remember is 33% of all your collagen is one amino acid – GLYCINE. 

Every third amino acid is glycine, so if you do not have enough glycine to meet all your metabolic demands, then regardless if you have all the other amino acids, GLYCINE is your rate limiter on NEW COLLAGEN PRODUCTION. 

Remember, you cannot use animal collagen as a peptide to directly replace your collagen. That is not a thing, any more than eating chicken wings gives you wings, or eating rump steak gives you a bigger bum. 

So the question is how much glycine do I need to take to get my body to make more collagen? 

That is a complex question because GLYCINE is the simplest amino acid of all, and probably the reason we have life on earth.

As a result, it is the backbone for many crucial molecules that we have to produce or we die. 

From Purines/DNA, to creatine (glycine + methionine + arginine), to Heme to gluthathione (glycine + cysteine + glutamine), to bile. 

These are molecules you cannot do without making new fresh ones. 

But collagen is a very long lived molecule, and so if there is a short fall of glycine, instead of removing old dead collagen and making new fresh, we turn off removal and new production. 

Leaving us with collagen that is older, stiffer and more prone to tearing and worst of all……wrinkling. 

So, we must saturate the tissues to the body’s demands and then, you will be able to turn on the FIBROBLASTS that make collagen and stay young, forever.

The deficit we are running for most people is somewhere between 8-10 grams of glycine. 

With, for example, 10 grams of collagen, as it is 33% glycine, you will get about 3.5g glycine. 

Still some way short of your needs. 

Hence, we created EVOLVED COLLAGEN back in 2023, a unique blend of collagen peptides AND GLYCINE, all together in a tasty tropical flavour. 

The reason is it flavoured tropical? 

Glycine in its natural state is intensely sweet, like sugar. So that, plus collagen in a powder, isn’t really palatable. 

So we have softened the natural sweetness with tropical tartness. Glycine also has a subtle bitter end taste which we have covered up with a dab of stevia. 

Hence, we have this on the back of the pouch. 

Obviously, if you do two dessert spoons in a small amount of water, it will be very sweet and very tangy. 

If you add it to 1 litre it is very gently sweet and tangy. 

Ideally, sipped through the day for better absorption, but it not just get it in. 

But, some people just do not like it, or they might want to take it before bed and do not want to drink a lot of fluids before bed. 

Plus, you cannot add this to coffee, or food to increase protein or hide it in foods for kids.

So, let’s do some maths. 

13 g SIMPLE COLLAGEN = 4 grams glycine, thus we should be ideally adding in at least another 4 grams, if not 6 grams, to bring our daily total to 8-10 grams. 

If you are really active or recovering from an injury           (tendonitis, cartilage, ligament strain, osteoporosis), then you may wish to increase that. 

I like to take 4 capsules twice daily, with one dose 30-60 minutes before bed (ideally on an empty stomach).

Some people do not quite know what glycine is, and the concept is somewhat hard to explain, so if they just want collagen, that is OK, just up the dose to take 25 grams or more daily. 

Equally, you might want to only give GLYCINE for sleep or anxiety.
